The Foundation for Cross Cultural Understanding (FCCU)
In 1991 CISV-USA received a bequest from the estate of Sarah Ernst Darnall. Mrs. Darnall was a friend of Dr. Doris T. Allen, the founder of Children's International Summer villages, Inc. She assisted with the early organization and preparation for the first village held in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1951.
The Sarah Ernst Darnall Fund was established by CISV-USA with the stipulation that the principal could not be spent and would be invested for maximum secured income. Grants would be awarded from available investment earnings.
By a vote of the National Board of Trustees of CISV-USA, The Foundation for Cross-Cultural Understanding was incorporated in 1993 with a transfer of the Sarah Ernst Darnall Fund resources. The Foundation is administered by five elected trustees who review and award grants benefiting the programs, activities, and projects of Chapters and the National Association of CISV-USA. Dr. Doris T. Allen is an Honorary Trustee. The President and Treasurer of CISV-USA serve as non-voting, ex officio trustees of The Foundation.
Also under the administration of The Foundation are the Scholarship for Humanity and the Scholarship for Ethnic Minorities. Scholarship for Humanity applicants must be enrolled in an accredited program that will directly benefit humankind. The first awards were given in 1997.
Members of CISV-USA can apply for grants by completing the application form. The application deadline is September 1 prior to the year for which funds are requested. Once grants are awarded, a liaison designated by The Foundation trustees administers each grant with periodic reports required.
The reports on previous grant awards are available at The Foundation address listed above. Grants have helped sponsor Ethnic Villages in the Maine, San Francisco Bay Area, and Greater Youngstown Chapters, a Deaf Village in the Knoxville Chapter, and Local Work projects in various Chapters. Grant awards have helped the National Association present a Presidents-Elect Workshop and a Risk Management Workshop, provide Leadership Training enrichment, and relocate and update the National Office used by CISV-USA and The Foundation.
